Originally inspired by the Association for Computing Machinery's "Computers, Freedom, and Privacy Conference", Electronic Frontiers Forums at DragonCon covers civil rights and civil liberties in online and technology-mediated spaces, including VR/AR-mediated worlds. We examine the intersection oftechnology, law, activism, and society, including online culture, and how they fit within the framework of a democratic society. We endeavor to bring together the best minds in law, technology, and advocacy to map out our shared future, highlight the risks, and consider the promises that technology can bring to our shared future.
Our major theme for 2022 will be the ever-increasing threats to our privacy, including privacy for children in an educational setting. Topics we plan to cover this year will include newly proposed privacy legislation, such as the American Data Protection and Privacy Act and the Government Surveillance Transparency Act, the already enacted Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), proctoring software in schools and in virtual education, privacy in the MCU (Marvel Universe) and what it means for our world, ransomware and cyber insurance, data scraping, the return of EARN-IT and its effect on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, and many others. Returning favorites include Hacking 101 and 201, Webcomics, 10 Rules for Dealing with Police Encounters, and Copyright 101. |
